Wayne Shevlin and Sasha Charlton
Finalist – Bathroom Designer of the Year
This startling design for a 90-year-old female client was created by Hampshire-based Inspirational Design. The brief was to create a modern ensuite shower room in part of an existing double garage in a bungalow, accessed from the master bedroom.
Shevlin and Charlton decided to create a dressing area between the existing garage and the end living room wall, as there was a structural niche between these two areas. This meant that the design could take advantage of previously unused outside space and create a functional dressing room through an elegant archway. This had the additional advantage of not taking away wall space from the bedroom as the door to the shower room was in the dressing area.
With there being no windows in the shower room, it was important to find ways in which the room could be kept bright and airy. Using the same large white tiles on the floor as well as the walls helped to make the room feel bigger and bright. In addition, the pearlescent turquoise mosaics, which run in a diagonal panel across the floor, up the bespoke wall and the WC and seat boxing, also help to bounce light around the space and give the impression of greater space.
Basin and WC were chosen specifically with rounded corners as a safety precaution, and they were also wall-mounted for ease of cleaning and maintenance.
The design incorporated two showers – a fixed and a hand shower – which are both thermostatically controlled and allow the client to ensure the right temperature is reached before stepping in, whilst underfloor heating adds luxury and comfort to the space.
The client is extremely happy with the end result – so much so that her recommendations have led to more work for Inspirational Design from her son and their friends.
